![]() The growth mindset has been a game changer for me as a graduate student. Being able to identify my own fixed mindset helped me get out of a negative cycle of "I can't do this." to one of "I can't do this yet.". The Digital Learning and Leading program at Lamar University is very different from anything I've ever done and I have learned that keeping an open mind and being willing to get out of my comfort zone have been key to being successful. I have had those negative thoughts of the fixed mindset on more than one occasion, but now I can identify them and replace them with a plan to change. I am learning to use criticism to my advantage to help me change and grow as a student. I think that experiencing the growth mindset will help me grow in my work as a graduate student and that the positive impact will also carry over into my teaching.
In addition to learning how to use growth mindset, I have worked to apply COVA to my graduate work. The evidence of using COVA is throughout my ePortfolio. This entire website has been my design down to the way it looks and feels. I have had choice in every aspect of the website and since it was my design, I have ownership of my work. Once that clicked for me, it made me want to work harder to make my ePortfolio something that I can use further down the road. It isn't perfect and I am aware that it is a living site that will change and evolve over time. It is my voice though, and it is centered around my thoughts and work as a student and a teacher. This has been an authentic learning experience for me because it is not just learning that is temporary. This portfolio will stay with me as a part of my work and will serve as a place where others can see the things I've done. I am hoping it will show my growth as a student as I get further into this program. As a student, I am also learning about making my mistakes into opportunities to learn and grow. Failing forward is a concept that I never really thought about before, but it is a way to use my stumbling blocks as a way to learn. There is freedom in seeing failures as opportunities and it has made me more willing to take some risks that I might not have before. I feel like I'm doing well so far in my graduate work, but I know there will be times where I miss the mark on a project and I am ready to accept that and learn form my mistakes as I go. The strategies I have learned in my first classes in the Digital Learning and Leading program are tools that will be key to my success. I have become more open-minded to the learning process and have gained insight into how I learn as well as how to shift my focus when needed to turn problems I encounter into opportunities.
